Contest & Judo Training News
Here is Larry being congratulated by Bunazawa Sensei, the head of the International Department, upon his arrival and commencement of matriculation at International Budo University.
Before his commencement of studies at IBU, Larry trained at Waseda University and the Kodokan for six months. The above photograph shows Larry receiving an award for his diligent participation at the New Year Special Winter Morning Practise Sessions, known as Kangeiko, in January at the Kodokan Judo Institute. This picture was subsequently published in the Kodokan Magazine which is distributed worldwide.
Larry in a visit to the Sumo arena in Tokyo met with an O-Sumo San who, amazingly enough, hailed from Bulgaria!
Congratulations to
Brian Pereira
of Stamford Judo for winning the 80 kg/181 lbs weight class at the 2011 & 2012 National Collegiate Judo Championships. In 2013, Brian took second place in the 90 kg/198 lbs weight class.
In the 2013 U. S. National Championships, Cameron Brett took 3rd in 161 lbs. brown belt division and Marshall Maor took first in the 80 kg masters division.
Here is a letter from Larry Wong who is studying and training at the International Budo University in Chiba Prefecture outside of Tokyo. It seems that Larry is engrossed in the curriculum of Japanese Language, Judo, Japanese History and Culture. Larry will finish his matriculation at IBU in March of 2009. Larry was a recipient of a partial scholarship which is available to members who train at our club here in Stamford, CT.
Larry writes:
Hello Coach,
How are you? Where can I start. First off, we are located at a place called Katsura and it is similar to Maine. Meaning that there is nothing to do here. Don't get me wrong, we are surrounded by a beautiful beach and forest, and it is the ideal place for judo and training.
We start off every Monday to Friday morning at 6:50 am with running training. We alternate between long running days and fast running days with stairs or hills. I run with the 66 kg and under guys. By the way, the captain leads our group and I had to piggy back him up the hill a couple times. He speaks a little English but he would yell at me to go faster several times.
Then we have Japanese and judo classes from Monday to Friday at 9:10 am to usually 4:00 PM. I rarely have any break times. Then we have judo practice from 4:30 to 7:20 PM every Monday to Friday. I take Saturday's judo practice off because my body needs to rest.
I am learning a lot of judo here, especially the basics like ukemi and Japanese style judo. This is a great learning environment.
I will keep you up to date. If you have any questions, please let me know.
Take care
Larry
